The Power of Curios and Energy in “Black Myth: Wukong”

Recently, Black Myth: Wukong has been creating a lot of excitement in the gaming world. In this action-packed adventure, players take on the role of Sun Wukong, embarking on a journey full of mystery and challenges, much like the famous Journey to the West. The game introduces players to a world inspired by Eastern wisdom, with concepts like karma shaping the gameplay. The visuals, inspired by ancient architecture and cultural landmarks, let players explore important historical locations. Many in-game items are based on real historical curiosities, and presented as valuable treasures.

Curio System: Boosting Your Strength

One of the key features of Black Myth: Wukong is the “Curio System.” Players can equip different curios to boost their character’s energy and abilities, helping them level up faster and defeat stronger enemies. These items, inspired by real archaeological finds, continue the tradition where people believed that wearing certain objects could increase personal energy—and that same idea comes alive in the game.

Glazed Reliquary

Tang Dynasty Glass Reliquary Bottle

The “Glazed Reliquary” is based on a real artifact: a narrow-necked glazed bottle found in the underground palace of Famen Temple. In the game, this curio helps the player restore energy during fights. The bottle is decorated with disc-shaped and teardrop-shaped patterns and has a raised design running down the middle.

In 1987, 20 glass artifacts were uncovered from the Famen Temple underground palace. Some of these glass pieces were from the Eastern Roman Empire (27 BC-AD 476) and the Arab Empire (7th—13th century) and were used by Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 907) emperors to honor Buddha relics.

Tiger Tally

Eastern Han Dynasty Tiger Tally

Another notable curio is the “Three City Military Tiger Tally” from the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220 - 280), which the Wei state used. The actual artifact is now in the Palace Museum.

Wind Tamer

Tang Dynasty Gilt Silver Perfume Sachet with Filigree and Floral Patterns

The “Wind Tamer” is inspired by a Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 907) silver sachet with gold inlay and an open floral pattern.

Boshan Censer

Western Han Dynasty Bronze Boshan Censer with Figures and Mythical Beast

The “Boshan Censer with Beast and Human Figures” is based on a real artifact from the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 9). The censer has two layers: the top shows mountains and clouds, while the bottom has patterns of mythical creatures and plants. The original is in the Hebei Provincial Museum.

Mani Beads

Tibetan Dzi Bead

According to Tibetan tradition, Mani beads are believed to have magical powers and hold positive energy. They are thought to improve both physical health and mental focus, keeping the wearer energized and alert.

Cat’s Eye Beads

Cat’s Eye Gem

Cat’s eye gemstones, known as “noble gems,” are highly valued for their rarity. These stones are believed to have strong spiritual energy that enhances relationships and improves personal aura.

Goldflora Hairpin

Qing Dynasty Gold Hairpin with Inlaid Gemstones and Bat Motif

Another curio in the game, the “Gold Inlaid Bat Hairpin,” is based on a prized item from the Qing Dynasty (AD 1644 - 1912), housed in the Palace Museum. In Chinese culture, bat symbols have long been linked with good luck.

Blending History with Gameplay

Black Myth: Wukong draws heavily from cultural history, adding depth to the game’s modern action. With its lifelike landscapes and carefully designed curios, the game offers a high-quality experience that also takes players on a journey through time. In the game, players can adjust their energy and abilities by using these special items, making them crucial for overcoming tough battles.

Balancing Energy in Real Life

While we can’t track our energy in real life the way we can in a game, we can still take lessons from ancient traditions to bring balance into our lives. Just like in Black Myth: Wukong, finding the right “curios” in our daily lives—whether they’re habits or practices—can help us unlock more energy, face challenges, and shape our fortunes for the better.
